Indigenous Perspectives on Social Innovation and Social Finance in Canada

The Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB), in partnership with Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), embarked on this research project to develop a preliminary, qualitative understanding of how Indigenous businesses navigate the current social finance ecosystem.

CCAB’s report: Indigenous Perspectives on Social Innovation and Social Finance, recommends the Federal Government undertake the following to increase Indigenous business participation in the social finance market:

  • Ensure the definition of a Social Purpose Organization is not a barrier to funding access;
  • Build the capacity of Indigenous intermediaries to deliver the funding; and,
  • Develop intercultural competency among non-Indigenous lenders.
