About City of Mississauga

In 1967, residents of Toronto Township overwhelmingly voted in favour of re-naming their new town ‘Mississauga’. There are many different interpretations of how this word came to exist with the most likely that it is an Ojibwa word meaning ‘river of many mouths’.

The City of Mississauga wishes to thank and acknowledge the Anishinaabe peoples who came to be known as the Mississaugas of the Credit for the City’s name.

As Canada’s seventh largest city, Mississauga is home to 777,000 residents and more than 94,000 businesses, including more than 75 Fortune 500 companies with Canadian head offices or major divisional head offices.

As a diverse, progressive and award-winning municipality, the City is committed to economic reconciliation, and each department/division is required to seek out opportunities to improve their procurement practices under a goal of working towards economic reconciliation.
