I am a self-taught beadwork artist of mixed Cree and Jewish heritage. Although I grew up in Ottawa and currently live in Toronto, I have strong ties to Manitoba. I am a proud member of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation in Nelson House, Manitoba (my dad’s home) and was born in Winnipeg (my mom’s home).
Beading has become a form of self-expression, allowing me to feel more connected to my family and Cree culture. Growing up, I was always in admiration of the various beadwork gifted to me by my aunties, and the immense dedication, beauty, and creativity they had put into every piece. My work combines traditional beading elements of my ancestors with more contemporary jewelry styles. My intention is to continue the tradition of creating heirloom pieces that can be passed down through generations. My pieces are non-ceremonial and can proudly be worn by anyone to showcase their respect and support for Indigenous artists and craftspeople. As a tribute to my aunties, my own role as an auntie, and the cherished place aunties hold in Indigenous families and communities, I named my company “nitōsis” (Cree for “auntie”).
