Scholarships of $2500 for university and college students
Russell
Andre
Russell is a 36 year old status Dene from the Gwich’in First Nation in the Northwest Territories who is in the first year of a university access program at Aurora College in Inuvik. He is the proud father of six children. Russell worked at many jobs over the years before deciding to return to school to set an example for his kids and to allow him to advance in his chosen field. One of his instructors praises his amazing attitude, great enthusiasm and awesome determination. His sponsor speaks of his work helping young people gain experience out on the land. After he completes his education Russell plans to make a career as a renewable resources officer in the NWT.
Jordan
Ducharme
Jordan is a 27 year old status Cree from the Tall Cree First Nation in Alberta who is in the fifth year of a combined science and arts program at the University of Lethbridge. This is his second FAAY award. Jordan works full-time as an addictions counsellor to help support his growing family while he takes a full course-load. One of his professors says his effort and focus are exceptional. His sponsor tells us about his success as a Big Brother and mentor in Edmonton and Lethbridge. Jordan plans to continue on to medical school and one day establish a family practice.
James
Makokis
James is a 25 year old status Cree from the Saddle Lake Cree Nation in Alberta who is in the second year of medical school at the University of Ottawa. This is his third FAAY award. He holds bachelor’s and master’s of science degrees and is currently the spokesperson for the national Aboriginal role model program. One of his professors speaks of his passion to improve the health of Aboriginal people and, indeed, all of his patients. His sponsor tells us of James’ enthusiasm, professionalism and dedication to his duties. After finishing his studies, James plans to practice family medicine back at Saddle Lake.
Debra
Saunders
Debra is a 38 year old status Swampy Cree from the York Factory First Nation in Manitoba who is in the fourth year of a social work program at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. This is her third FAAY award. Debra returned to school a few years ago. She admits that getting used to life in the city has been a struggle, but she knows completing her education is worth the effort. One of her instructors says she has deep empathy and compassion for the women she works with. Her sponsor speaks of her excellent academic progress and her tireless volunteer work. Debra plans to work in the area of justice and domestic violence and to help other women making changes in their lives.
Anik
Sioui
Anik is a 31 year old status Algonquin from the Abitibiwinni First Nation in Québec who is in the first year of a community psychology doctoral program at l’Université de Québec à Montréal. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Montréal. Anik returned to school in order to make a greater contribution after working at a women’s shelter for several years. One of her professors says she has all of the qualifications, interest and determination to attain her doctorate. Her sponsor holds her in high esteem and praises her incredible initiative and energy. Anik plans to direct her research toward the prevention of child abuse.
Nibisha
Sioui
Nibisha is a 25 year old status Algonquin from the Abitibiwinni First Nation in Québec who is in the fourth year of a community psychology doctoral program at l’Université de Québec à Montréal. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology. This is her second FAAY award. She has been studying away from home for many years but maintains her strong ties with her family and community. Her professor calls her a genuine intellectual whose leadership will be important to her nation. Her sponsor says she honours the Aboriginal value system of collaboration, leadership and learning. Nibisha plans to use the skills and knowledge her education is giving her to contribute to the health and well-being of Aboriginal communities.

Matthew
Gould
Matthew is a 15 year old status Mi’kmaq from the Membertou First Nation in Nova Scotia who is in grade 10 at Sydney Academy High School in Sydney. He is a consistent honours student who also plays baseball and is a member of his local boxing club. Matthew plans to go to university and eventually make a career in game programming or graphic design.
Marcella
Rankin
Marcella is a 16 year old status Mi’kmaq from the Eskasoni First Nation in Nova Scotia. She is in grade 10 at Northumberland Regional High School in Westville, Nova Scotia. Marcella is an outstanding student with plans to enter the advanced International Baccalaureate program. She plans to excel in this program, continue with further learning, and one day open a book store.
