Scholarships of $2,500 for university and college students

Darryl is a 29-year old Inuk from Arviat, Nunavut who is in the third year of the Nunavut Teacher Education Program at Nunavut Arctic College in Arviat. He and his “lovely wife” have a “beautiful daughter”. Darryl is very active with his church and teaches hunting skills to fatherless young men. He is raising a dog team and plans to start racing when they are ready. One of his instructors says he has taken a leadership role in the classroom and the community. His sponsor says his work with the youth of his church makes him an important role model. Darryl plans to teach for a few years, become a principal and eventually help mould the Nunavut education system by working for the territorial education department.

Jocelyn is a 25-year old Inuk from Arviat, Nunavut who is in the third year of the Nunavut Teacher Education Program at Nunavut Arctic College in Arviat. She is a married mother of two and recently won an award as a top-notch hockey Mom. Jocelyn is a talented musician who has performed across Nunavut and Nunavik; she is also a much sought after volunteer in the community. One of her instructors says she has demonstrated a commitment to achieving a career in education. Her sponsor calls her a role model for the young people. After she graduates Jocelyn plans to teach in Arviat, where she has lived all her life.

Laura is a 30-year old Inuk from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut who is in the third year of an Indian teacher education program at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. She found that her first student teaching experience last year really solidified her desire to stay in the field - for the first time she felt more like a teacher than a student. One of her professors says she is highly motivated, hard-working, intelligent and an impressive performer. Her sponsor tells us that her contribution to community events is greatly appreciated. After graduation Laura plans to return to the north and make a career as a teacher.

Tiffany is a 24-year old Inuk from Arviat, Nunavut who is in the third year of the Nunavut Teacher Education Program at Nunavut Arctic College in Arviat. She is a published poet who is married with two small children. Tiffany returned to school after working for a few years and learning more about her Inuit heritage. One of her instructors says she is aware of the responsibility she has to be a role model for the community’s children. Her sponsor praises her volunteer work at church and with the Hamlet of Arviat. Tiffany would like to teach history in an effort to pass on the wisdom she has learned from the Elders.

Karen is a 15-year old Inuk from Iqaluit, Nunavut who is in grade 10 at Qitiqliq High School in Arviat. This is her second FAAY award. She is an excellent student and athlete who has travelled throughout the territory to science camps and tournaments in several different sports. Karen plans to attend Carleton University and eventually study and practice international law.

Nicole is a 16-year old Inuk from Arviat, Nunavut who is in grade 11 at Qitiqliq High School in Arviat. This is her second FAAY award. She worked as a camp counsellor last summer, which she enjoyed very much. She is a member of a local youth group where her valuable contributions of time and effort are appreciated. Nicole plans to go to college to study politics because she would like to represent her community.

Dorothy is a 15-year old Inuk from Arviat, Nunavut who is in grade 9 at Qitiqliq High School in Arviat. She is an award-winning student and a member of the Arviat Imngitingit (singers), who perform at holiday gatherings and community celebrations. Dorothy is not sure what to do after high school but she is determined to finish her grade 12.

Roxy is a 15-year old Inuk from Arviat, Nunavut who is in grade 10 at Qitiqliq High School in Arviat. She has recently left her job at the Co-op to concentrate on her studies. Roxy’s volunteer time is devoted to the local youth group and she is working on improving her wrestling talents. After high school Roxy plans to study business management at college or university.

Matthew is a 17-year old Inuk from Arviat, Nunavut who is in grade 11 at Qitiqliq High School in Arviat. This is his second FAAY award. He is a good student who especially likes math. Matthew volunteers at the local elders centre whenever he can and knows that the key to a better life is a good education. After high school, Matthew plans to train to be a pilot.

Kathleen is an 18-year old Inuk from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut who is in grade 12 at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik (high school) in Rankin Inlet. She is a talented artist who gets good marks while helping out around her school and community. Kathleen wants to be an actress and plans to go on to university because if she falls off her feet acting, she will have her education to catch her.

Jon is a 15-year old Inuk from Arviat, Nunavut who is in grade 10 at Qitiqliq High School in Arviat. This is his second FAAY award. Last summer he fundraised to help pay for a Nunavut Youth Abroad Program volunteer work placement at a daycare in Barrie, Ontario where he was very highly regarded. Jon hopes to attend university in the south on a hockey scholarship and then come home to be a wildlife officer.

Kerri is a 17-year old Inuk from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut who is in grade 12 at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik (high school) in Rankin Inlet. Kerri has been on the honour roll every year since grade five. Last summer she did a Nunavut Youth Abroad Program volunteer work placement in Botswana. An excellent student, Kerri plans to study medicine in the south and come home to practice as a pediatrician.
